"Can we pretend that airplanes. In the night sky are like shooting stars. I could really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)."- B.o.B. featuring (Hayley Williams of Paramore)
Mary sits on the back deck with her Brian and Vanessa Harvell around the lit table and dusk of West Lake behind them. There has been no mention of the fight that took place between Ryan and Brian a few weeks ago. Instead she has been subjected to endless chatter about how happy the brunette makes her son and how she is greatest thing in her life. She has politely smiled through the conversation and attempted the small talk when necessary, when her son’s phone rings and he steps away from the table she is relieved.
“You could at least try, and be happy for us.”
Vanessa’s voice breaks her from her inner thoughts and she folds the cloth napkin on her lap, before meeting her eyes, “That would require me to actually approve of you.”
Vanessa is flabbergasted by her response, she has never even met the woman until now so the strong feelings of dislike come off as strange to her. Throughout the whole dinner she has been trying to put on a good impression because Brian asked her too. Meeting his mother has been something he had been thrilled about around New Year’s he was eager to have her met his mother. Now dealing with Mary’s attitude she isn’t even sure why.
“He put a lot of effort into this so that we could get to know each other.” Vanessa shoots back quietly.
“You really think he is going to stay here, for you? He belongs in California with his family, not with you.” Mary sneers.
“You don’t know anything about me.”
Mary studies her for a moment, the perfect face the money that seems to radiate off of her from good breeding. Breeding that Ryan had, breeding that was ignored and pushed aside when Alam, Garrett and James made her get out of town. Garrett hadn’t made an effort to tell his daughter to end the relationship, so she would. She refused to let Vanessa Harvell break her son’s heart.
“I have to say that slumming really isn’t your families style. I would have thought that you would aim for someone with a little more money, a little more prestige or a trust fund. Shall we say someone like Jacob Donovan.”
Mary watches her reaction to Jake’s name, a wall is put up and she knew she had hit the jackpot.
“That’s right you two used to be pretty serious until his sister died. Then again with you being behind the wheel that might of been difficult, I guess you thought latching onto my son would be your easy way out. If you think for one moment I’m just going to sit back and let you break my son’s heart, sweetie you have a whole lot of learning to do.”
When Vanessa is silent she continues.
“Your mother was the same way snotty, looking her nose down at everyone around her marrying for money. Turned out that she couldn’t exactly deal with all your dad’s minor issues and her own, shame that she got fed up with it all and hung herself.”
Vanessa makes sure to reel in her tempter, as Brian makes his way back to the table, leaning down to kiss her. Shooting Mary a icy stare before rising from the table.
“Excuse me. I’ll be right back.” she says, walking away from the table to bite back the tears that are threatening to fall.
Brian looks over at his mother for a moment looking back at Vanessa seeing she is clearly upset. Once she is out of earshot he turns back to his mother.
“What did you say to her?”
Mary looks at him coldly, “Something that she needed to hear.”
Hooked up the machines in the room from his chemo treatment Shane offers his mother, Dr. Larkin and Peter a thumbs up. His only regret is that Paige hasn’t got the clearance yet to go to treatments at the hospital yet. He is still a bit surprised that Paige is letting Callie work her case, though he knows that Paige is itching to fire her head attorney. He hopes that she does, maybe if Callie and her work things out they can get Garrett on her case or Sharon, smiling at his mother again he focuses on laying his head back against the bed.
Helen hates seeing him like this, hooked up to machines to get him better, the risk of still losing him all too real. She is glad that he has come around with her helping Dr. Larkin and Peter, knowing that it eases her mind. When Dr. Larkin writes in that chart, offers her a faint smile before heading to his next patient she is left alone with Peter. Peter Jones, the name still strikes her as semi odd for being a doctor given that he disappeared after a few run ins with the law in his early college days, joining the military.
“The tests came back negative for you and Kate to be matches. I am sorry Helen.” Peter says.
It is news that she had hoped she would be able to swallow, a light at the end of a dark tunnel, that they would find a bone marrow donor.
“We’re going to put Shane on the list for a match it could take a few weeks to a few months.”
Helen nods her head knowing that with the information they have it is the best that they can do, there is another option. An option that she is not supposed to know about, an option that Nick told her on his death bed. His illegitimate child, is out there alive and well, possibly being a match for Shane. It is an option that now as a last resort she has to come to terms with and consider.
“Helen did you hear me?” Peter asks, seeing her staring off for a bit.
Focusing her attention back on Peter she nods her head, “Yes, of course.”
Peter looks at her for a moment, focusing his attention back on the pile of charts in his hand, making sure his notes are covered.
“I never would have expected you to go and become a doctor,” Helen manages to get out at her protege.
Peter glances over at her and shrugs his shoulders, “I liked the blood and gore in the Army. It seemed to fit.”
Helen nods her head at him.
“He is going to feel ill for a few days after this, I’d say let him off rounds for a few days let him pick up his shift afterwards. I would recommend that he not work at all but I know that telling him that is going to be like talking to a brick wall.” Peter finishes, satisfied with his notes.
“If there was another way to get a donor and I didn’t want my children to know about it, could we arrange it?” Helen suddenly asks.
Peter isn’t really sure what she is asking him, she looks nervous and like she has seen a white ghost. Taking her to a seat near by, he folds his hands in his lap knowing that comforting is not his strong suit. Perhaps she is just under a lot of stress with Shane that she is rambling and just talking insane.
“Helen we are doing everything possible, he’s on the list there is no need for irrational decisions,” Peter offers, only to be cut off as he is paged over the loud speaker.
He offers her shoulder a squeeze of support before leaving her in the hallway, to attend to the problem on the loud speaker. Helen watches him go before glancing back through the window at her son. She will do whatever it takes to ensure that Shane is alive and well, it will probably mean violating her oath as a doctor. Knowing that she needs to speak to Garret and Alan about the woman that her husband was having an affair with well over twenty years ago and the child that she had with Nick.
Posing as a married couple on a second honeymoon in New York to bust an under ground gambling ring is hardly Tyler's idea of fun. He had tired to get out of the gig with Greg, only to be told it wasn’t possible, he owed a favor to someone. Thus, leading him to cancel another dinner date with Callie, something she had not been thrilled about. Instead he is sitting at the poker table, Jamie by his side arm draped over his shoulder smiling.
“Your turn rookie,” the balding man across from him says.
Jamie looks over the table carefully, a few heavy hitters here and there but the big money still hasn’t come out yet. Once the heavy hitter comes to the table and they get him to bite on the bet, the task force will come in and make the arrest. So far he hasn’t gotten to the point of actually wanting to come out and join in on the game, She watches Tyler carefully place his bet and the card flip over around the table, Tyler wins the hand again, earning a round of applause.
“How long have you two been married?”
The voice catches them both off guard, as they turn their heads to see Gordon Harris enter the room, the ring leader of the ring.
“Two years come July” Jamie says.
“You certainly don’t act like it, Charles I’ll take over. I’ve been watching you both from upstairs, you’re both a bit stiff with each other.’ Gordon says, taking a seat and looking between them. ‘Frankie, check them.”
Tyler watches, as Charles leaves the table and Gordon’s muscle decides to start making his way to the table, he has to think quickly. In order to keep the sting going he reaches up, brushing his fingers against Jamie’s cheek and then presses his lips to hers. Jamie in turn returns the kiss her fingers curling into his hair, and after a few minutes they pull apart. She glances at Tyler for a moment, before looking back over at Gordon.
“Is that really necessary. I thought we all came to play a game.” she says, giving him her best smile.
Gordon ponders things for a moment, “You’re right. Perhaps with your winnings I would be kind enough to accommodate the two of you a room.”
Leaning back in his chair as the cards are dealt and the game begins, Tyler waits patiently with Jamie and waiting to give the signal to the rest of the team for the raid. When it comes to Gordon’s bet, as soon as his chips are laid in the pot, the team enters the room. Tyler and Jamie both draw their guns and their badges, as arrests are made ending the six hour sting that they have been on.
“We should see if we could take advantage of that room offer.” Jamie says, glancing over at him.
When she sees his expression not change she shakes her head.
“Lighten up, we made a good team back there I was simply kidding around.”
“It’s not a joke and it’s not funny. I happen to be very happy in my current relationship.” Tyler says, shrugging his shoulders at her.
“About that kiss back there, you just seemed pretty into maybe I read signals wrong then?” Jamie asks, quietly.
He had been hoping that she would just forget about it and not bring it up, it had been the heat of the moment something that he had to do. Did he enjoy it, deep down he knows that it was slightly entertaining. It doesn’t equate to him that he has feelings for her or that his relationship with Callie is in trouble.
“Let’s just forget about it all right?” he says, opening up the squad car so that they can head back to West Lake.
Austin steps into the hospital nursing station flowers in hand, as the nurse directs him to Kate's room. According to her mother she will be fit to go home in a few days, after being diagnosed with a high risk pregnancy. He is happy for her though part of him has been wondering if in-fact the baby is his, deciding to just confront the issue at hand. Knocking on her door, he waits for a moment hearing her invite him in.
Kate looks up from her spot on the bed and some of her charts, as Austin steps into the room, she can feel her heart race. Pausing for a few moments to remind herself to remain calm, it isn’t good for her or the baby to be stressed. He looks happy, as he enters the room crossing to the bedside table and placing the flowers there. Kissing her temple before taking a seat next to the bed and folding his hands in his lap.
“Your mom said you and the baby are doing good.” he manages.
“High blood pressure isn’t very good, I’ve been labeled as high risk. Which, means no work for the rest of the pregnancy and I have to take it easy. Thanks for the flowers.”
“I haven’t seen Cade come by.”
Kate pauses for a bit at the mention of Cade, he showed up at the hospital to just up and walk away. They haven’t spoken, except for a brief phone call that effectively ended their relationship, him being unable to raise Austin’s child. She has been forced into the mess that she has made and now she has to live with the consequences. She considers telling him about the baby, instead she diverts back to something else his wife, Liz.
“How is Liz since she has been home?” she asks quietly.
“She’s doing pretty good, it’s a bit overwhelming she’s glad to be home. I dropped her off at the office this morning.”
Kate nods her head at him, “What about you are you happy that she is home?”
Austin offers her a shrug, wondering if she is in fact hiding something about the pregnancy from him or not.
“You keep deflecting about you and Cade.”
“And you keep deflecting to how you are doing with your wife being back.”
Both sit in silence for a moment, the monitor on the machine keeping track of her blood pressure rising a bit. It is silent for a minute or two before returning back to normal, as she looks out the window. Running a hand through his hair before placing his hand under his chin.
“Kate, I just...,” he begins only to be cut off.
“What do you want Austin? I’m having my baby, I’ll be fine Cade decided that he didn’t want a part of it. I don’t need you coming around and trying to fix this for me I am not your problem. We’re not together, you made that clear when you married Liz.” Kate manages to get out.
“I just wanted to make sure you were all right.”
“We’ll I’m fine. You can go now.” she says looking at him and the door.
Austin isn’t sure what to chalk up her reaction to other than she is hiding something from him. In order not to upset her any further he makes his way towards the door, pausing to look back at her one final time. Knowing that the stress isn’t good for her or the baby and knowing that it is best that he leave for the moment.
“I’ll see you Kate. Call if you need anything.”
The door closes in her room and Kate turns her head in order for the tears to fall from her face. Knowing that it is for the best if Austin never finds out the truth about the baby.
Moving around the office Liz is happy to be back at work, happy to be doing something other than sitting at home or in a doctor’s office. She is happy to be back to semi normal, she is happy that Cade has let her return to work to begin with. Filing the contract on the land outside of town for a developer she smiles, the market is still in the slump but one is better than none. She smiles, locking the file cabinet in the office as Cade enters.
“You did a good job on closing out the deal. It’s good to have you back.” Cade offers.
Liz smiles at him nodding her head, “Honestly it feels good to be back.”
“How are things at home?”
“They’re good I’m going to counseling once a week, I’m staying clean. I call my sponsor if I feel edgy. Austin hasn’t made his way to group or therapy yet but I’m hoping he’ll come around.” she says reminding herself to stay optimistic about everything.
Cade considers her statement and wonders if Kate has spilled the beans or not about the baby. Thinking that if Kate doesn’t he is going to have to, if only to see Kate squirm a bit in her own lies and deception. Hurt that she and Austin choose to sleep together and she choose to keep the child. His one night stand with Camryn Mulroney is still very much so on his mind, though he isn't sure if he is literally losing his mind at this rate. He still sees her everywhere, at the office, at home while he is sleeping. The medication he gave up on weeks ago, and now he is beginning to regret that decision.
“I was sorry to hear about you and Kate. I sent her some flowers.”
Her voice filters through his thoughts and he quickly realizes that he cannot bring himself to ruin her marriage with Kate’s secret.
“Yeah.”
“What happened between you two?” Liz asks, taking a seat in her chair at her desk.
“Our lives were going in different directions, nothing more and nothing less. It was just time Liz.”
“You two seemed happy at the wedding. Not that I remember much leading up to the wedding with my behavior but you guys seemed on the right path.”
Cade looks at her, “It’s over Liz and it’s not something you have to worry about. Kate isn’t going to be running back to Austin as her protector and she isn’t going to make a move on him, okay?”
Liz looks at him searching for some kind of answer from her friend and her boss about the real reason that his relationship with Kate has ended. She is met with dark eyes that reveal nothing back to her, eyes that remind her of Vanessa. She is still waiting for the other shoe to drop with her and Austin and shakes the thought to the side. She is going to focus on the more positive points in her life.
“How is Vanessa? We talked on the phone briefly the other day, she sounded different.”
“She’s going through a lot.” Cade offers with a shrug of his shoulders.
“I haven’t been a very good friend to her over the last few years, now maybe I can fix it you know? I have to be a better person, get things back in order in my life.” she says.
“Take it one day at a time Liz, I don’t think any of your friends are going anywhere you have time.” Cade says, reaching over and squeezing her hand.
“Thanks Cade.” Liz says, looking over and smiling at him.
Cade looks at her seeing she is trying to change for the better that she is trying to get her life in order. Hoping that his statement about Kate not making a move on Austin will hold up, seeing she wants to work on her marriage. He also wonders if Austin is really going to be able to stay away from Kate now that they aren’t together anymore.
If you are an associate at Harvell & Associates in the conference room for the morning meeting you can feel the tension between Sharon and Garrett lingering in the air. Callie looks nervously over at her Vanessa, who has returned to the firm and school a few weeks ago, shifting in their seats uncomfortably. By the time the meeting has concluded both rise from their seats and exit the room and out of the line of fire from their parents.
“I made a call down to the courthouse, the divorce case from a few weeks ago needs to be moved.” Garrett says, watching his daughters leave for a moment before looking back down at his papers.
“We need to talk Garrett.” Sharon says, seeing the girls leave and then glancing at her husband.
“We have nothing to discuss Sharon, you made that clear the other night.”
Sharon glares at him for a moment, before rising from the desk to close the conference room door. Returning to the table to snatch the file out of his hand.
“How dare you,” she seethes.
“I’m not the one defending the man who put our daughter in prison.” Garrett says, rising from his seat to snatch the file back voice rising.
Both spot one of the secretaries looking through the window at the raised voices and both are reminded that they are at work and not at home. Sharon takes a few moments to gather her thoughts, placing a hand on her waist to calm down. Garrett shoves his hands in his pockets, before sighing and taking a seat back down at the table.
“This is destroying us Garrett, here at work and at home. It is killing the kids. They do not need to see us fighting on top of everything else that is going on,” she manages to finally get out.
Garrett looks at her unaware that the kids had seen them fighting, “When?”
“The other night when you stormed out. Callie was at the top of the stairs and then Vanessa came in a few moments after you left. Cade wasn’t home thank God.”
“I don’t know what to do Sharon. I feel like I don’t even know who you are anymore.” Garrett finally admits.
“We should see a counselor. It could help, I took the case. I should have talked about it with you before hand. I can’t have this destroy the kids, not after everything we have been through as a family.”
Garrett considers her statement for a moment and he knows that he can’t let that happen either for the sake of their family. His kids have been through far too much over the last few years to loose the sense of security they have. Sharon is the only mother that they know, Callie is their sister and it would crush them. He can’t do that to them and more so he can’t do it to himself either, he loves Sharon at the end of the day.
“I think...,” he begins to be cut off then the conference phone comes on and one of the secretaries speaks.
“Mr. Harvell, Mrs. Harvell Judge Newman is on line one about Richard Weston and the pending suit that we filed against the court for Vanessa. She says it is urgent. Should I patch her on in?”
Garrett looks over at his wife who is just as baffled, as he is, “Patch her on through.”
A few moments pass before Holly Newman’s voice comes over the speaker.
“Garrett, Sharon I am requesting that you both come down to the courthouse later this afternoon at four. The district attorney has went ahead and offered a plea agreement for both cases that I would like to go over with you both. I think you will find the terms to both cases agreeable.”
“We’ll be there Holly.” Garrett says.
The line goes dead and neither are sure what kind of a game Simon or Richard are playing.
